Jacob’s Pillow is home to multiple unique performance spaces, each offering a distinct and immersive experience for audiences and artists alike. From historic indoor venues to scenic outdoor stages, every space is designed to celebrate the beauty of dance in a setting like no other.

To ensure an enjoyable experience for all, we ask patrons to review our house rules before attending a performance. You can also explore more details about each theater below.

House Rules

While in our performance spaces, please refrain from behavior that could disturb other patrons and performers during the performance. We ask that you:

  • Food and Beverages: Please refrain from consuming food in performance spaces. Clear liquids with a lid are permitted.
  • Electronic Devices: Silence all cell phones and electronic devices.
  • Photography and Recording: Unauthorized photography or video recording is prohibited.
  • Tickets: Keep your e-ticket accessible at all times.
  • Assistance: Staff members and an on-site EMT are available during performances for any assistance.
  • Service Animals: Only official service dogs are permitted in the theaters; all dogs must be leashed on the grounds.
  • Late Seating: Late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager. Performances begin promptly; seat assignments cannot be guaranteed after the curtain rises.
  • Health and Safety: Adhere to our Health & Safety Policies throughout your visit.

Ted Shawn Theatre

Built in 1942 as the first theater in America designed specifically for dance, the Ted Shawn Theatre stands as the heart of Jacob’s Pillow. After extensive renovations, it reopened in 2022, blending historic charm with modern amenities. The theater accommodates up to 620 patrons, offering an intimate setting for diverse dance performances.

Note: Some seats may have partial obstructions due to staging or lighting. Our Box Office will inform you of any such views during ticket purchase.

Doris Duke Theatre

Set to open on July 2025, the new Doris Duke Theatre is a state-of-the-art venue designed by the renowned architecture firm Mecanoo. This 20,000-square-foot space more than doubles the size of its predecessor, offering flexible seating for up to 400 patrons. The theater serves as a living lab for artists, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, extended reality, and robotics into live performances. Its sustainable design features a mass timber structure, a green roof, and landscapes honoring the Indigenous history of the land.

Henry J. Leir Stage

The Henry J. Leir Stage is our beloved outdoor performance space, offering audiences the chance to enjoy dance amidst the natural beauty of the Berkshires. Seating is on wooden benches with simple seatbacks; patrons are welcome to bring or purchase seat cushions for added comfort. Beloved by Pillow fans for decades, it has housed the free Inside/Out Performance Series in previous seasons.

In case of inclement weather, performances may be moved or canceled. Rain or Shine ticket holders will be notified immediately directed to the indoor showing. Shine Only ticket holders will be notified immediately and offered refunds or the option to donate the cost of their tickets.
